The EcoVend machine is a clever recycling solution that will reward citizens for returning plastic bottles.

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), in collaboration with the Eco Earth Foundation and Miss Earth beauty queens, has announced plans to implement the machine in order to encourage responsible waste disposal and lessen plastic pollution throughout the city.

During a sensitization exercise with shopkeepers in Accra’s Central Business District on Monday, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, the city’s mayor, characterized the project as a workable solution to the problem of plastic trash while sustaining livelihoods.

Accra must become cleaner, and that begins with each of us taking responsibility, he added, reiterating the Assembly’s resolve to put an end to careless dumping and enforce sanitation bylaws more rigorously.

The mayor also took advantage of the opportunity to caution vendors from encroaching on road reserves and sidewalks, stating that the red line policy would continue to be enforced.

Insisting that no such promises could be kept, he cautioned traders against giving money or favors to security agents who claimed they could secure permanent places, emphasizing that the enforcement operation was not meant to destroy livelihoods but rather to restore order and maintain market safety.

The machine will soon be placed to make recycling rewarding and convenient, according to Gisela Emefa Gagakuma, Executive Director of the Eco Earth Foundation.

Ms. Gagakuma said that careless plastic dumping was clogging sewers and polluting seafood, which would ultimately endanger public health.

While Sonia Mosombi, representing Miss World Morocco, characterized the project as essential for Ghana’s advancement in environmental preservation, Winifred, Miss Earth Ghana 2024, encouraged shopkeepers to gather plastics and sell them to recycling firms instead of discarding them around.
