The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has confiscated 40 vehicles at Tema Harbour following an intelligence-led investigation that discovered the usage of fake Drive from Port (DP) badges, as well as genuine stickers placed to vehicles with mismatched records.

According to a statement released by the DVLA on April 17, preliminary investigations suggest that a firm imported the automobiles into Ghana.

Evidence, however, indicates that the disparities found were caused by an agent hired to clear the vehicles on the company’s behalf reportedly using illicit means.

The Authority clarified that the implementation of DP stickers was a component of larger changes intended to reduce revenue leaks related to the prior metal DP plate method.

The number of DP stickers issued by the DVLA increased significantly after the reform, from an average of 2,000 per month to over 15,000 in October 2025.

However, a drop in the ports’ issuance volumes in recent months prompted suspicions, which led to additional research and the most recent operation.

According to the DVLA, it is closely collaborating with National Security to look into the issue and step up measures to stop fraudulent activities in the chain of car importation and registration.

The Authority noted that data integrity from the time of entrance to final registration is crucial and emphasised the significance of keeping accurate vehicle data to guarantee road safety, enhance traceability, and promote efficient transport policy decisions.

Additionally, it advised car importers and other interested parties to do their homework and follow established protocols to the letter.

In cooperation with National Security, the DVLA reiterated its dedication to protecting Ghana’s vehicle administration system’s integrity and stopping more abuses in the industry.
