Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, a former vice president and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2028 presidential contender, has demanded that the prosecution of an NDC organiser in Agona West, who is accused of making derogatory remarks about him, be immediately stopped.
Dr. Bawumia explained in a statement released by his office on Wednesday, July 22, that he neither filed a complaint nor approved the prosecution of the person who was detained and charged with posting false information and making derogatory remarks about him.
According to the statement, “Dr. Bawumia wishes to state, clearly and unequivocally, that he has neither lodged any complaint nor sanctioned any prosecution against this young man or any other citizen. He does not desire, and will not endorse, the arrest or prosecution of any Ghanaian in his name for speech.”
The former vice president stated that despite being the object of insults and lies throughout his public career, he has never retaliated by using state institutions.
“His conviction remains that the answer to offensive speech is better speech, and the answer to falsehood is truth, not handcuffs, courtrooms, and crushing bail conditions imposed on ordinary Ghanaians,” the statement added.
Dr. Bawumia made an appeal to the Attorney General and the Ghana Police Service to withdraw the case and any related prosecutions that were being pursued in his name.
“He therefore respectfully calls on the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney-General to discontinue this prosecution and any similar actions purportedly undertaken on his behalf, and to release the young man to return to his family and his livelihood,” the statement said.
Dr. Bawumia claims that when anyone, especially political rivals, may openly express themselves without worrying about being detained or prosecuted, Ghana’s democracy is improved.
In addition, he asked political figures to concentrate on matters that are important to Ghanaians and pardoned the accused.
The statement ended with the words, “Dr. Bawumia forgives the young man, wishes him well, and urges all political actors to channel their energies toward the issues that matter to the Ghanaian people.”
