At the official sod-cutting ceremony to begin Phase II of the Blekusu Sea Defence Project, the President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, was joined by Major (Rtd) Dr. Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon, Director General of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), and Hon. Teddy Safori Addi, Deputy Director General of Operations. Agavedzi is a thriving fishing community in the Ketu South District.

Agavedzi and the nearby coastal settlements have suffered greatly over the years due to tidal waves, which have destroyed homes, taken away properties, and disrupted livelihoods, especially for the fishing community.

The President emphasized in his speech that the project’s goals include preserving the fishing operations that support the local economy in addition to protecting people and property against future tidal waves.

A state-of-the-art fish market with cold storage facilities and a lorry station will be built as part of the project to assist fishermen and enhance transportation connections, which will increase local commerce and trade.

The organization’s commitment to promoting proactive disaster avoidance and creating resilient coastal communities is demonstrated by the presence of NADMO’s leadership.
