Helicopter Crash: Road closures for the State Funeral

Ahead of the recent military helicopter crash victims’ interdenominational and interfaith state funeral, the Ghana Police Service has announced a number of temporary road closures, traffic detours, and parking arrangements.

The event will take place at Accra’s Independence Square on Friday, August 15, 2025.

In order to maintain public safety and efficient traffic control, some of the roads surrounding the site will be temporarily closed, and drivers will be given alternate routes.

Closing of Roads in following places

During the event, the following roads will not be open to traffic:

  • 28th February: Road from CEPS Traffic Light Intersection to Castle Road Junction.
  • Osu Cemetery Traffic Light on Lokko Street.
  • Castle Road from AU to Osu Cemetery Traffic Light.
  • Starlet 91 Road is closed at the Ministries Traffic Light Intersection.

Diversions of Traffic in the following places

It is recommended that drivers be aware of these detours:

  • Traffic from La, Labone, and Osu on the 28th February Road towards the Central Business District and Ministries will be diverted onto Salem Avenue Road at the Castle Traffic Light to link with Oxford Street.
  • Motorists from Lokko Street, Osu, towards Castle Road should use Ajumaku Street and Oxford Street in Osu.
  • Traffic from John Evans Atta Mills High Street towards Black Star Square will be diverted onto Liberia Road at the CEPS Traffic Intersection towards the National Theatre Traffic Light Intersection.
  • Traffic from the AU Circle towards Castle Road via the Osu Cemetery Traffic Light will be diverted to Abdul Diouf and King Hassan Roads to join Abdul Nasser Road near the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ).

Parking Lots With Approval in following areas

The Black Star Square arena and parking lots will only be accessible to cars with authorized windshield entrance badges, namely RED stickers bearing the VVIP designation. Among the parking spaces that have been designated are

  • VVIP, VIP – Black Star Square
  • Forecourt of the State House
  • International Conference Centre
  • Access Bank Car Park
  • Osu Cemetery Car Park
  • Accra Sports Stadium Car Park
  • Ministries Area
  • Ministry of Food and Agriculture Car Park
  • Marine Drive Football Park
  • Afua Sutherland Car Park

Towing and Recovery Operations

No car will be permitted to drive across prohibited areas or park in unapproved spots, the police said.

In and around the event grounds, recovery and towing trucks will be available to remove any disabled, abandoned, or improperly parked cars.

For the state funeral to be conducted with efficient traffic management, the public, especially drivers, is asked to work closely with the police and other security forces.
