80 individuals have been arrested by police during an anti-crime operation in the Upper East Region.

The Upper East Regional Police Command, with assistance from the Inspector-General of Police (IGP)’s Special Operations Team, has apprehended 80 individuals in an intelligence-led anti-crime operation throughout the region.

During a swoop operation that took place in the Bolgatanga Municipality, Bolgatanga East, Bongo, and Nabdam Districts between May 25 and June 3, 2026, the suspects—72 men and eight women—were taken into custody.

The Ghana Police Service’s Upper East Regional Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Abdul-Rahman Sumaila, said in a statement that preliminary investigations showed the suspects were engaged in various criminal activities, including the sale and use of drugs.

According to the statement, 12 suspects, eight men and four women, were apprehended in Zuarungu, Bolgatanga East District, as a result of the operation.

In the Nabdam District, 14 suspects, 12 males and two females, were captured at Pelungu, Kongo, and Nangodi, while 34 suspects, 32 males and two females, were detained in Bongo.

During the operation, twenty individuals in the Bolgatanga Municipality were also taken into custody by the police.

According to the statement, other objects thought to be connected to illegal activity were recovered from the suspects and different operation locations.

A motorbike, several foreign smokes, male condoms and large amounts of what seemed to be Indian hemp were found by authorities at Tongo.

According to the statement, three rounds of NATO 5.56x45mm ammunition and two motorcycles were recovered by officers in Bongo.

Parts of a casino jackpot machine, one unregistered motorbike, various foreign cigarettes, various drinks thought to contain narcotics, and packages and bags with dried leaves suspected of being narcotics were all seized as a consequence of the operation in Nabdam.

It further stated that at Bolgatanga, the suspects were discovered in possession of a casino jackpot machine, two registered motorcycles, an unregistered Haojue motorcycle, various smokes, and dried leaf substances thought to be Indian hemp.

According to the statement, all of the suspects were being held, helping with investigations, and will appear in court to face charges.
