The National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Vice Chairman Chief Sofo Azorka allegedly threatened Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin during a conflict at the NDC office in Akwatia on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

Tensions in Akwatia started when Chief Sofo Azorka and Afenyo-Markin got into a fight during an unexpected visit to the party office.

NDC executives and supporters got into heated arguments after Afenyo-Markin and his entourage showed up out of the blue.

Known for his outspoken leadership, Azorka called the visit “provocative” and “highly disrespectful,” accusing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of trying to scare local NDC members.

Afenyo-Markin’s entourage allegedly invaded the office to take down their candidate’s posters, according to several NDC members.

Azorka warned that the NDC will oppose any attempts by the NPP to use the by-election as a test ground for “undemocratic strategies.”

He raged, “A by-election will be held in his [Afenyo-Markin] constituency if he tries anything,”

He continued, clearly agitated, “What does he want here? Is he secretary of the NDC? You folks ought to speak with them.”

The Effutu MP responded to Azorka in an interview on Adom TV by denying the allegations and stating that similar statements have previously been made.

“I am informed that the NDC Vice Chairman, Chief Sofo Azorka, said he wanted to ‘kill’ me. This is not the first time we have heard such threats. But I am not a coward.” he stated.

He also exhorted his followers to hold fast.

“There are foot soldiers on the ground. Nobody should allow Azorka’s words to create fear. Politics is about courage, not intimidation. Our forebearers even endured jail for the cause, so no one should give in to fear.” he stated.

Lawyer Bernard Bediako Baidoo, the NDC’s candidate, won the election after collation.

He received 18,199 votes, or 54.30% of the total, Kwame Asumadu of the NPP received 15,235 votes, or 45.46%, and Patrick Owusu of the LGP received 82 votes.
