Authorities have launched a manhunt for a former bank manager and are offering a GH¢100,000 cash reward for information that leads to his arrest in connection with the suspected loss of over GH¢30 million.

Akwasi Agyemang-Abebrese, a former customer service manager at the bank (name withheld) in Kumasi, has been declared the main suspect in a complicated fraud case by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

The claimed charges for which he is wanted include “Stealing and Money Laundering.”

Internal bank records state that an audit found that “a total of GH¢33,384,494.00 was stolen by Akwasi Agyemang-Abebrese.”

Funds from a KNUST Postgraduate Student Hostel account and the bank’s internal accounts were embezzled during the November 2023–February 2025 scam.

Agyemang-Abebrese “debited both internal accounts and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) accounts” prior to transferring the funds to his personal bank account, according to the bank’s petition to EOCO.

Allegedly, GH¢4.85 million was taken straight out of the student hostel’s finances.

A network of collusion was uncovered by the bank’s inquiry, which also named a number of additional employees as “inputters,” who allegedly handled 61 transactions totalling GH¢29.7 million.

The bank did, however, claim that “all the transactions were authorised by Akwasi Agyemang-Abebrese.”

A letter dated March 7, 2025, was the first to mention the suspect’s departure. It claimed that “Akwasi in the bid of searching for the source documents, left the branch without the knowledge of the Branch Manager or any staff” after being requested to produce source documentation for suspicious transfers.

“All efforts to reach him have proven futile as his phone is switched off,” the bank said.

The “GH¢100,000 Cash Reward” for information on Agyemang-Abebrese’s location was issued by EOCO in a public notice.

The public is encouraged to get in touch with the nearest police station, any regional office, the EOCO Head Office on Barnes Road in Accra, or by calling 0256957742 or 0579709066.
