John Odartey Lamptey, a businessman accused of severely attacking his wife in Ofankor, Accra, has been remanded for the second time after appearing before a Circuit Court at the Police Headquarters on December 3, 2025.
Lamptey, who originally appeared in District Court, is now charged with inflicting hurt, bodily assault, two counts of threatening murder, and engaging in domestic abuse.
Grace Lamptey, a 51-year-old food vendor, was also arrested and charged with threatening violence. Both have pleaded not guilty.
The court granted Grace bail of GH¢20,000 with two sureties and ordered her to return to the police every two weeks, while it ordered John to stay in detention. The lawsuit has been postponed until December 16, 2025.
John’s bail was opposed by the prosecution, who claimed that releasing him could endanger his personal safety and possibly sway witnesses.
Defense attorneys contended that the accused were not flight risks, pointing out that they were detained at their known addresses and were prepared to abide by any bail requirements set forth by the court.
The first accused’s wife, 32-year-old unemployed Harriet Amuzu, is the complaint. The couple has two kids.
Investigations revealed that in July 2025, John assaulted Harriet, forced intercourse with her, and put pepper in her vagina, according to the prosecution.
She allegedly fled to relatives for protection after he confiscated her cell phone and one of their kids.
He allegedly contacted her on November 15, 2025, stating that their two-year-old child was ill.
She found the child wasn’t ill when she came back the next day. John allegedly tore her clothes, claiming he had purchased them, and stopped her from leaving the following morning as she tried ripped gather her stuff.
He tore her clothing and waist beads, stripped her naked, and threatened to murder her, the prosecution told the court.
He is claimed to have responded, “You think I will let you go like that? I will kill you. I set a trap for you, and I will bury you at the cemetery behind us.”
According to reports, John attacked Harriet with a slipper and an aluminum mop stick before brandishing a cutlass and telling her to extend her hands so he could sever them.
According to a video that went viral online, he allegedly used a PVC pipe to carry out the assault.
After escaping, Harriet went into hiding.
The second accused, Grace, is said to have challenged and threatened the person who uploaded the video, stating, “I give you three days, you will die.” Later, she was taken into custody.
According to the prosecution, Harriet returned from hiding on November 20, 2025, and had psychiatric counseling and a medical examination.
