The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has intensified its enforcement operations to remove traders and other commercial operators occupying Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) shelters across the capital.
The exercise forms part of efforts by the AMA to restore BRT bus shelters to their intended purpose, improve pedestrian safety and ease vehicular movement in key areas of Accra.
The latest enforcement operation was carried out on Monday, October 5, 2026, under the leadership of the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey. The operation focused on the Aayalolo BRT bus shelter near the former Telecel office at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange.

According to the AMA, traders had occupied sections of the bus shelter and were selling mobile phones, accessories and other items, restricting access to commuters who rely on the facility.
Despite heavy rainfall during the operation, the Mayor, together with the Assembly’s Coordinating and Finance Directors and the enforcement team, proceeded with the exercise. Tables and other items obstructing the facility were removed to reopen the shelter for public use.
AMA Explains BRT Shelter Eviction Exercise
Addressing the affected traders, Mayor Allotey explained that the enforcement exercise was not intended to target individuals or deprive them of their livelihoods.
He said the operation was necessary to restore order, protect commuters and ensure public infrastructure is used for its intended purpose.
The Mayor also pointed to the improvement in movement around the area after the traders and their belongings were removed, saying it demonstrated how unauthorised trading activities had affected traffic flow and access to the BRT bus stop.

He further noted that commuters who should have been using the designated Aayalolo bus shelter had been forced onto the road because traders had occupied the facility.
According to the Mayor, the situation created potential risks for both pedestrians and motorists, making the enforcement exercise necessary to improve safety and mobility around the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange.
The AMA is expected to continue its efforts to prevent unauthorised trading at BRT shelters and other public spaces in Accra as part of measures to improve urban mobility and maintain order across the city.
