Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has revealed that the first indigenous music streaming app in Ghana will be released in November.
During a Wednesday, October 16, 2024, meeting with stakeholders in the creative arts industry, he made this statement and emphasized the need for an indigenous platform to better support regional artists and filmmakers.
“I’m pleased to inform you that the development of the platform is complete.” said Dr. Bawumia.
He emphasized the significance of a domestic streaming provider to guarantee equitable remuneration for Ghanaian performers, pointing out that global platforms presently yield meager financial rewards for regional talent.
“Spotify and other platforms are foreign-owned, which is why the payments to our musicians are so low,” he stated.
By designating a specific area for Ghanaian material, the new platform seeks to address the existing imbalance, as the Vice President underlined. It is a worthwhile investment.
“Our goal is to have a local platform that houses all the music and film catalogues we can find in Ghana.”
He said, “If I invest $100 million in the creative arts sector, I assure you, the returns will be significant,”
The software is intended to support content creators in optimizing their income, precisely monitoring royalties, and offering a structure for improved revenue administration.
To the audience’s joy, he said, “Next month, in November, we are ready to launch this platform for Ghanaian musicians and filmmakers,”
Industry participants, who have long pushed for a more equal approach of content commercialization, have embraced this initiative.
The platform is anticipated to improve creative work control and revenue models, supporting the long-term development of Ghana’s creative arts industry.
