Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, a North Tongu member of parliament, has criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for not abolishing the Covid-19 Levy despite the removal of all Covid limitations.

Even if the 1% tax is controversial, President Akufo-Addo said in his speech to the nation on May 28 that the government will still impose it.

The COVID Health Recovery Levy, which was put in place to help close some budget gaps, “might not be the most popular tax, but I implore all of you to bear with us,” he said.

“Let me make it clear that COVID expenditures, largely unplanned, have been subject to audit by the Auditor-General at my instigation, and are going through parliamentary processes,” he continued. We all require assurance that unethical behavior was not covered up by the catastrophe.

However, Mr. Ablakwa stated in a tweet in response to the President’s speech that “Ghanaians expected President Akufo-Addo to have announced the elimination of COVID-19 levy even as he lifts all constraints.

Akufo-Addo: “Ghanaians also expected the terrible E-levy to be removed since his administration has chosen an IMF bailout. Hopefully the IMF Board will meet on Wednesday to approve Ghana’s request.

“President Akufo-Addo must be sincere and considerate of the suffering Ghanaians’ plight.”
