Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, a flagbearer candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), will pick up his nomination paperwork today at the party’s headquarters in Asylum Down to start the process of registering to compete in the Presidential Primary of the United States Tradition.

According to people familiar with Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto’s campaign operations, the activity will be carried out by a group of party supporters named Friends of Dr. Afriyie Akoto.

“This organization has committed their own finances to Dr. Afriyie Akoto’s support because they firmly believe in him. They keep pressing Dr. Afriyie Akoto to run for flagbearer in an effort to keep the party together. They will therefore choose the nomination paperwork today and deliver it to Dr. Afriyie Akoto’s campaign office. This is to encourage him,” Benjamin Oduro, who is aware of Dr. Afriyie Akoto’s political activities, said.

If everything goes according to plan, Dr. Afriyie Akoto’s selection of nomination papers will increase the total number of candidates who have chosen nomination papers to contest the party’s presidential primary to five.

Former trade and industry minister Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, former Mampong constituency representative Kofi Addae Nimo, former energy minister Boakye Agyarko, and former NPP general secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyapong all filled out nomination forms when they became available on Friday, May 26, 2023, to indicate their interest in running.

However, it is unclear when Joe Ghartey, the MP for Essikado Ketan, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, the former minister of trade and industry, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, the MP for Assin Central, and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president, will choose their nomination papers.

All of them have made it known that they plan to run in the party’s presidential primary.
The path to the NPP’s Presidential Primary was unveiled by Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party’s general secretary, on Thursday, May 25, 2023.

According to an announcement issued in Accra, the nomination period will begin on Friday, May 26, 2023, and end on June 24, 2023. If more than five candidates run in the party’s presidential primary, a special Electoral College election will be held on Saturday, August 26, 2023.

It also set a date for its National Congress, which will elect a flagbearer for the general elections in 2024, on Saturday, November 4, 2023.
