Berekum West Member of Parliament Dickson Kyere-Duah has called for the urgent demolition and reconstruction of the Accra Sports Stadium, popularly known as the Ohene Gyan Sports Stadium, saying the facility in its current state may not be suitable for hosting major international football competitions in the future.
The MP made the call after touring the stadium to assess its condition and determine the level of rehabilitation required ahead of Ghana’s hosting of the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
According to Dickson Kyere-Duah, the stadium may appear attractive during football matches played under floodlights, but a detailed inspection exposes several serious structural, maintenance and infrastructure challenges that require immediate attention.
He noted that the contrast between the stadium’s appearance during match days and its actual condition should prompt authorities to take decisive action rather than continue with temporary repairs.
“When you come here on match days, especially matches that are played under floodlights, you see the place being so magnificent,” he said.
“But when you take a deep tour, as we’ve done, then you realise we have a very long way to go. We need to respond as quickly as possible.”
The Berekum West MP argued that continued investment in short-term rehabilitation and maintenance works would only provide temporary relief without solving the underlying problems affecting the stadium.
He is instead advocating for the complete replacement of the existing facility with a modern international-standard stadium capable of hosting major FIFA and Confederation of African Football (CAF) competitions.
“We should be thinking about replacing this facility entirely, pulling everything down and building a modern stadium that befits the status of Ghana’s capital, Accra, to host FIFA and CAF-sanctioned matches,” he stated.
Kyere-Duah described the condition of the stadium as a matter requiring urgent government attention, insisting that cosmetic improvements alone would not be enough to transform the facility into a world-class sporting venue.
“It’s so terrible, and I think we need to work very, very fast,” he added.
The call comes at a crucial time as Ghana prepares for major international football assignments, including the 2027 AFCON qualifiers and the country’s hosting of the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.
The proposed reconstruction of the Accra Sports Stadium could therefore become an important part of efforts to improve Ghana’s sports infrastructure, enhance the country’s ability to host international football tournaments and provide a modern venue that meets FIFA and CAF stadium standards.
