Ghanaian rap superstar Sarkodie has called on wealthy business executives and investors in Ghana to provide greater financial support to local musicians, saying Nigerian artists benefit from stronger backing from billionaires and corporate leaders.

Speaking on a recent episode of the When We Sit podcast, the award-winning rapper explained that many Ghanaian musicians rely on their personal resources to fund their music careers, albums, promotions and international performances.

According to Sarkodie, Nigerian businessmen are more willing to take financial risks by investing in emerging and established talents, giving their artists a competitive advantage in the African music industry.

The rapper noted that securing sponsorship for major music projects in Ghana can be difficult, even when artists present detailed business plans. He cited the high cost of organising international concerts, including performances at major venues such as the O2 Arena, as an example of the financial challenges musicians face.

Sarkodie also recounted an encounter with Nigerian billionaire Tony Elumelu, during which he was surprised by the level of financial investment being committed to a Nigerian artist he believes has a promising future in Afrobeats.

He urged Ghanaian entrepreneurs, wealthy individuals and corporate organisations to follow the Nigerian model by investing in local music talent.

Sarkodie believes increased private-sector investment in Ghana’s music industry could help musicians expand internationally, create employment opportunities and strengthen Ghana’s position in the global entertainment market.
