Ghana’s Black Princesses have been eliminated from the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after suffering a heavy 4-0 defeat to France in their final Group C match in Poland.
The Ghana U-20 women’s team needed at least a draw against France to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive. However, the Black Princesses were unable to contain France after the break, with the European side producing a dominant second-half display to seal a convincing victory.
The defeat means Ghana have once again failed to progress beyond the group stage of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, extending their run of early exits since making their tournament debut in 2010.
Black Princesses Started Strong Against France
Ghana went into the crucial encounter with renewed confidence after securing a victory over South Korea in their previous Group C fixture. That result had raised hopes that the Black Princesses could make history by reaching the knockout rounds for the first time.
Head coach Charles Sampson made one change to the starting lineup, with Latifa Abesik replacing the injured Esther Asamoah.
Ghana appeared to have taken an early lead when Priscilla Mensah found the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
The Black Princesses remained competitive throughout much of the first half, limiting France’s attacking opportunities as both teams went into the halftime break level at 0-0.
France Dominates Second Half
The game changed after the restart as France stepped up their attacking performance and took control of the contest.
The European side scored four unanswered goals in the second half to secure a comfortable 4-0 victory, finish top of Group C and send Ghana out of the competition.
The result, combined with South Korea’s victory over Ecuador, left Ghana at the bottom of Group C with three points.
France finished top with seven points, while South Korea advanced to the knockout stage in second place with four points. Ecuador finished third.
Ghana’s Knockout Stage Wait Continues
The latest defeat extends the Black Princesses’ disappointing record at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, with Ghana still waiting for their first appearance in the tournament’s knockout rounds.
The result is also a setback for Ghana women’s football, as the Black Princesses had hoped their victory over South Korea would provide the momentum needed to make a historic run in the competition.
Ghana’s elimination also means that three African teams have now exited the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, following the earlier group-stage departures of Benin and Tanzania.
