The minority in parliament has warned that there will be severe repercussions if the government’s economic policy and 2023 budget statement are not approved, as happened on Tuesday, November 6.
The opposition claimed that although the budget was approved on Tuesday, that approval was only one step in the process of certifying the government’s financial plan.
The group highlighted that while Ghanaians’ critiques of the government following Tuesday’s ratification in Parliament were legitimate, the general public needed to recognize the position taken.
Following criticism from some members of the public, Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu told the media in Parliament on December 7 that his party is not opposed to the full 2023 budget.
He explained that rejecting the entire policy paper would, for instance, prevent the government from paying Ghanaian workers at the end of January of the following year, which the Minority would not like to happen given the current economic crisis.
However, he reaffirmed that his party will scrutinize the entire budget approval procedure to make sure that the public’s concerns in Ghana were addressed before the appropriation measure was enacted.
The Minority, for instance, is against debt structuring because it violates contractual rules and duties, according to Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, who also emphasized that they will oppose the program as it has been laid out by the Minister of Finance.
According to him, the Minority will also request information about the expenditure reductions the Minister declared through the other budget processes.
Therefore, he asked the populace to have faith in the Minority’s ability to hold people accountable and stand strong beside them.
