The Ministry of Education has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving secondary education, expanding school infrastructure and enhancing the quality of education in Ghana as Somè Senior High School (SOSSEC) celebrated its 60th anniversary.
The Diamond Jubilee celebration brought together stakeholders, including traditional authorities, school management, teachers, students, parents and alumni, to commemorate six decades of educational development in the Ketu South Municipality.
The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, was represented at the anniversary celebration by his Technical Adviser, Prof. George Oduro, who delivered a speech on his behalf.

In his message, the minister congratulated the chiefs and people of the Somè Traditional Area, the school’s governing board, management, staff, students and former students for their contributions to the institution’s development over the past 60 years.
Education Ministry Considers Category Upgrade for Somè SHS
A major highlight of the anniversary address was the disclosure that the Ministry of Education had received a petition from the Somè Traditional Council requesting an upgrade of Somè Senior High School from Category C to Category B.
According to the minister, the request would receive serious consideration under the World Bank-supported US$300 million STARR-J Project.
The initiative is expected to support improvements in educational facilities and school infrastructure, helping to expand access to quality secondary education.

Government Warns Against Teacher Misconduct in Schools
Beyond infrastructure development, Haruna Iddrisu emphasised the importance of discipline, integrity and good character in Ghana’s education system.
He urged teachers and school administrators to prioritise student welfare, protect learners and report inappropriate conduct, particularly sexual misconduct.
The minister warned that the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service would not protect any teacher found guilty of misconduct.
He also called on alumni, parents and traditional authorities to continue supporting Somè SHS to strengthen its academic performance and institutional development.
Students were encouraged to remain disciplined, work hard, respect their teachers and make responsible use of digital learning technologies.
The government’s position reinforces its broader commitment to improving senior high school infrastructure, promoting quality education and creating a safe learning environment for students across Ghana.
