Carlos Queiroz has left his position as head coach of Ghana’s Black Stars following the team’s 4-2 defeat to The Gambia in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Portuguese coach have mutually agreed to end their professional relationship after Ghana suffered back-to-back defeats in the opening two AFCON 2027 qualifying matches. Ghana previously lost 2-0 to Côte d’Ivoire before suffering the 4-2 home defeat to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The defeat came after the Black Stars had taken a 2-0 lead through goals from Ernest Nuamah and Felix Afena-Gyan. The Gambia fought back before half-time and eventually completed a 4-2 comeback victory, leaving Ghana without a point from its first two Group C matches.
Carlos Queiroz Speaks After Black Stars Exit
Following the decision to terminate his contract, Queiroz said the separation was agreed upon by both parties and was made with the interests of Ghanaian football in mind.
He also urged Ghanaians to continue supporting the Black Stars players despite the team’s difficult start to the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.
“Believe in these players. Protect them. Support them,” Queiroz said, emphasizing that the squad possesses the talent and potential to achieve significant results for Ghana.
Ghana Football Faces New Coaching Decision
Queiroz was reappointed by the GFA in September 2026 after previously leading the Black Stars during the 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign. His new mandate was intended to cover the next phase of Ghana’s international football programme, including the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.
However, Ghana’s consecutive defeats to Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia have brought his latest spell in charge to an end.
The GFA will now have to address the Black Stars coaching situation as Ghana prepares for its remaining matches in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Queiroz Urges Support for Black Stars Players
Despite his departure, Queiroz maintained that Ghana’s players have the ability to improve their performances and compete strongly in future matches.
His message comes as the Black Stars seek to recover from a difficult start to the AFCON 2027 qualification campaign.
The GFA’s decision to part ways with Queiroz marks another change in the technical leadership of the Ghana national football team as the country looks ahead to its remaining qualifiers.
