The New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, is expected to face harsh criticism once new accusations against him are made public by Dr. Srem Sai, the Deputy Attorney-General and Minister of Justice.
The news has focused on Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti regional chairman of the NPP, since Friday, May 23, 2025.
Initially, national security agents attempted to ambush him at his Kumasi home, but the large number of party supporters prevented the incident.
Chairman Wontumi and his attorneys made an appearance at the Ghana Police Service’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters on Monday, May 26, 2025, to respond to some inquiries.
The Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) hauled up the NPP mainstay on Tuesday after he made a second visit at the CID headquarters.
The arrest of the chairman of the NPP’s stronghold has drawn a lot of criticism.
On Thursday, May 29, 2025, Dr. Justice Srem Sai posted on his official Facebook page that Chairman Wontumi is being investigated for alleged significant criminal offenses, such as money laundering, fraud, and causing financial loss to the state.
The investigations, according to Dr. Srem Sai, are not just focused on local criminal activity; they are also a part of a larger international organized crime investigation that is being carried out in cooperation with international law enforcement partners.
Dr. Sai posted, “Suspect Bernard Antwi Boasiako, a.k.a. Chairman Wontumi, is under investigation for various criminal offences. The criminal investigation is running concurrently with asset recovery processes, to prevent further dissipation of what law enforcement agencies strongly suspect to be proceeds of crime.”
He went on to explain that the Economic and Organised criminal Office (EOCO) is actively collaborating with overseas agencies on a second line of inquiry that is a component of a “larger international organised crime scheme.”
According to reports, Chairman Wontumi was detained overnight for not meeting a GH¢50 million bond requirement imposed by EOCO in relation to the current investigations.
On Thursday, the minority caucus and a few party officials picketed outside EOCO’s headquarters for more than three hours, claiming that Wontumi’s incarceration was politically motivated and calling for a reassessment of what they saw as unfair bail requirements.
