The New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also referred to as Chairman Wontumi, has refuted claims that he insulted the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the Asante Kingdom when interviewing candidates for the region’s parliamentary seat.

During the vetting process, Chairman Wontumi is alleged to have made disrespectful remarks against the Asantehene.

Along with Ofori Attah Tom-Tom, the chairman of the Manhyia South NPP Constituency, Nana Kwaku Duah, the Chief of Kokoso and the Obremponhene of Otumfuo, reportedly filed a formal complaint with the Kumasi Traditional Council.

Chairman Wontumi stressed his profound respect for the Asantehene and the Asante Kingdom in reaction to the accusations.

He called the charges “pure lies” and flatly refuted them. With the words, “I have a lot of respect for the Asantehene and the Asante Kingdom and will never do anything to run this kingdom down, never,” Chairman Wontumi reaffirmed his commitment to preserving the dignity of the realm.

On January 22, the Kumasi Traditional Council called Bernard Antwi Boasiako to account for the purportedly disparaging comments.

The Council instructed the NPP leadership to make sure Chairman Wontumi appears before it the next Monday in order to address the remarks he allegedly made during the Manhyia South parliamentary candidate screening process.

In reaction to the problem, the National Organizer, Henry Nana Boakye, and the NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, visited the Manhyia Palace with a few regional party officers in tow.

Informing the Council that Chairman Wontumi was presently ill, General Secretary Frimpong requested a two-week extension so that the party could arrange for Wontumi’s attendance.

Even though Chairman Wontumi had to use a wheelchair in order to come before the Council, members of the Ashanti Kingdom clan showed fury and insisted on the matter despite the request.
