Ghanaian media personality and social commentator Efia Odo has explained why she has become less vocal about political accountability and government criticism, saying her approach to public activism has changed significantly with age and experience.
Efia Odo made the clarification in a post on X, after a social media user questioned why she was no longer criticising the current NDC government with the same intensity she directed at the previous NPP administration.
Efia Odo Says Her Approach to Politics Has Changed
Responding to the criticism, Efia Odo said she had matured and no longer believed that constantly attacking politicians publicly was the most effective way to achieve political change.
She explained that her views on political activism in Ghana had evolved and that she did not want to become a tool in partisan political conflicts.
“Because I’ve grown. I’ve realised that constantly attacking politicians publicly doesn’t always create the change I want to see. With age comes maturity, and my approach has evolved. I no longer want to be used as a pawn in political battles or feel like I have to attack one party to prove I’m holding leaders accountable,” she wrote.
Her comments have reignited discussions about the role of celebrities and public figures in Ghanaian politics, as well as how social commentators should approach government accountability.
Efia Odo and Ghana Political Activism
Efia Odo has previously attracted considerable public attention for her outspoken views on Ghanaian politics and governance.
Her criticism of the previous NPP administration made her a prominent voice in online political discussions.
However, her latest comments suggest that she is taking a more measured approach to political activism and public accountability, rather than focusing primarily on public attacks against political parties and government officials.
She stressed that holding leaders accountable does not necessarily require her to constantly criticise one political party.
Efia Odo’s Mother Reveals Political Threats
Efia Odo’s decision to reduce her political activities comes amid concerns over threats reportedly made against her.
Earlier this year, her mother, Adombi Serwaa, disclosed on UTV’s United Showbiz programme that she had received threats linked to her daughter’s political activism.
According to Adombi Serwaa, some individuals warned that something could happen to Efia Odo if she did not stop her political activities.
She said she was outside Ghana at the time but became deeply worried after hearing about the threats.
“I wasn’t here in Ghana, but I was hearing everything. I feared for my daughter’s life. A lot of people threatened me,” Adombi Serwaa said.
Mother Pleads With Efia Odo to Step Back
Adombi Serwaa also revealed that she pleaded with her daughter to reduce her political activities because she feared for her safety.
She said the situation was particularly distressing because of the possibility of losing her daughter.
The revelation adds another dimension to Efia Odo’s decision to adopt a different approach to political commentary in Ghana.
Efia Odo’s New Approach to Political Accountability
Efia Odo’s latest position suggests a shift from highly confrontational political commentary towards what she considers a more mature approach to holding political leaders accountable.
Her comments have generated debate online about whether public figures should openly criticise governments, engage in behind-the-scenes advocacy, or maintain a non-partisan approach to political accountability.
For Efia Odo, the focus appears to be on maintaining her independence and avoiding being drawn into political battles between the NDC and NPP.
Her decision highlights the challenges public figures can face when they become actively involved in Ghana’s increasingly intense political discourse.
