First Lady Mrs. Lordina Dramani Mahama has called for a peaceful world with chances for children’s development and well-being, and she has called for coordinated international effort to protect children’s future.
On the fringes of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, she made a passionate plea during a special yearly prayer session for children at the Tillman Chapel Church Centre in New York.
Mrs. Mahama emphasized the uncertainty that children now confront, which is made worse by reduced funding for necessary programs, rising institutional mistrust, and a decline in optimism.
She pointed out that although there are many obstacles to overcome, particularly for the weak, they can be done so with group prayer and a resolute determination to face the quickly shifting global order.
“We gather here from different nations and cultures, but we are united by our shared faith,” she stated, adding that, through prayer and decisive leadership, “we can create a world where every child is protected and empowered to achieve their full potential.”
Thousands of children are mercilessly robbed of their childhoods in violent conflicts and humanitarian catastrophes, especially in Africa, as Mrs. Mahama vividly depicted.
“These are precious lives destroyed by circumstances beyond their control,” she lamented. “When nations fail to focus on policies that safeguard the home, strengthen communities, and nurture the youth, it is our children who suffer the most. They are the ones who lose parents, siblings, homes, and dreams and carry emotional scars that can last forever,” she said.
Through her non-governmental organization, the Lordina Foundation, which works to improve the lives of Ghana’s poor children and orphans, the First Lady spoke about her own dedication to these principles.
Such charitable endeavors around the world could have a significant impact on the lives of innumerable children if they receive more widespread support, Mrs. Mahama said.
The First Lady prayed for the children of the world, saying, “Heavenly Father, I lift the needy and orphaned children in Ghana and across the world into your loving care. I ask that you surround them with protection, comfort, and hope for a brighter future. Provide for their daily needs, including food, shelter, clothing, and education. Bless those who dedicate their time and resources to care for them. May these children grow in wisdom, strength, and joy, knowing that you love them. Guide their paths with opportunities, surround them with kindness, and let their lives shine as testimonies of your unfailing grace and provision. Amen.”
The World Council of Churches, Caritas Internationalis, the Episcopal Church, and other prominent faith-based organizations collaborated with World Vision International to conduct the yearly prayer service, which serves as an essential advocacy platform.
