Accra has become the hub of global diplomatic convergence, with officials from more than 80 countries arriving in Ghana for the Next Steps Conference on Reparatory Justice.

The president of Senegal, Namibia, Liberia, São Tomé and Príncipe, the prime minister of Barbados, the vice prime minister of Equatorial Guinea, the speaker of the Algerian Parliament, and ministers from over 80 countries worldwide are among the high-level attendees, according to Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s minister for foreign affairs.

Under President John Dramani Mahama’s auspices, the conference is being held, which officials describe as a decisive continuation of international discussion on historical justice and redress.

“The Presidents of Senegal, Namibia, Liberia, São Tomé and Príncipe, Prime Minister of Barbados, Vice Prime Minister of Equatorial Guinea, Speaker of the Algerian Parliament and Ministers from over 80 countries arrive in Ghana for the Next Steps Conference on Reparatory Justice convened by President John Dramani Mahama,”
on Thursday, June 18, he posted  on his Facebook page.

The meeting takes place three months after UN Resolution A/RES/80/250 was adopted, a historic ruling that changed the way people around the world spoke about the transatlantic slave trade and its lasting effects.

“The convening comes three months after the historic adoption of UN Resolution A/RES/80/250 declaring the transatlantic enslavement as the gravest crime against humanity,” the minister reiterated.

The Accra conference is anticipated to strengthen commitments, provide multilateral avenues, and transform reparatory justice from a theoretical concept into a practical international policy against the backdrop of a revitalised global conscience.
