In Psalm 73:26, King David noted that his flesh and his heart may fail; but God is the strength of his heart, his portion and helper forever.

Indeed, our efforts and strength may fail in our attempt to achieve our set goals in our journey towards eternity on earth. Much of what God require us to do, depends on us, yet our strength and efforts are too human and weak to fully comply with what we are expected to do to please God.

A father was watching his young son try to roll away a heavy stone. The boy exerted all his energy to move the stone but the stone remained where it was. “Are you sure you are using all your strength?” the father asked. “Yes, I am,” said the exasperated boy. “No, you are not,” the father replied. “You haven’t asked me to help you.”

Like this father, God also wants to get involved in our battles, but we have to ask Him to help us. He will not rudely jump into our affairs until we acknowledge His presence and call on Him. He will not automatically come to our aid in our effort to deal with that aspect of our character we aren’t pleased with, unless we honestly admit our weaknesses and ask Him to help us.

So, have you asked God for help? Have you really asked Him for strength to fight your battles? It is possible we can pray about a situation without really asking God to help us deal with it. It is one thing commanding and binding and another thing, pausing to soberly acknowledge the power of God and inviting Him to help you deal with a particular situation. He is willing to help but He must be recognized and be invited to do so in order for us to appreciate His help when we get our breakthrough.

Sometimes prayers said on our behalf by men of God do not work because we tend to see those who pray for us as our helpers and not God. Until we begin to ask God directly to help us in our prayer and through the prayers of others, we will only attempt to use all our strength to move huge stones and they won’t budge.

So, today, and this week, let us pause and take a second look at our challenges and what worries us. Let us see how we have used all human efforts to tackle them but to no avail. Let us do an introspection to see how we may have just prayed over them without explicitly asking God to help us deal with them. Then, let us pray a simple prayer, acknowledging how weak we are and inviting God to help us deal with our situation. It may be an addiction. It may be childlessness, joblessness, financial burden, sicknesses, etc. But God has the power that transcends ours to help us face and deal with these challenges. Let us invite Him to help us now. AMEN.
