He answered and said, “Whether He is a sinner or not I do not know. One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see.” – John 9:25
Jesus had opened the eyes of a blind man to see and the Pharisees were not happy about it.
They decided to deal ruthlessly with anyone who confessed and praised what Jesus had done. First they asked his parents who, how, and by what means their son was healed. His parents answered “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; but by what means he now sees, we do not know, or who opened his eyes, we do not know. He is of age; ask him. He will speak for himself.”
In John 9:22, the Bible said the boy’s parents gave these evasive answers because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had agreed already that if anyone confessed what Christ had done, he would be put out of the synagogue. So, the Pharisees. after being outsmarted by the parents of the boy, went to the boy himself and said to him, “Give God the glory! We know that this Man is a sinner.” But the boy answered and said, “Whether He is a sinner or not I do not know. One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see.”
Brethren, Christianity isn’t about any useless and productive arguments of the past. It is about the state of man now and how it’s gonna be tomorrow. It is also about the good things we know about Christ and about others who are being persecuted and how we can testify about them. We noticed that the blind man didn’t want to be drawn into any argument and religious gossips. He simply testified about what Christ had done for him. All he knew was, he was blind and was healed.
Our best testimony about ourselves should be same and should never be about the past. What is heavenly refreshing is for one to boldly say “I was blind but now I can see”; I was a womanizer but now I have stopped; I was a drunkard but now I have stopped; I was a thief but now I no longer steal; I was quick tempered but now I am sober and patient etc etc. It is not about the past and it is not about arguments on anything. It is not about people’s gossips and rumours. It is about who we are now and who we would be in Christ tomorrow that matters most.
As occurred in the days of Christ, it happens today too. Sometimes we hear wicked gossips, lies and unproven allegations about people who have been very good to us. Unfortunately, we tend to like bad news about people than good news. So, we fall for, and allow the unproven lies and gossips to torpedo our knowledge about how good people are and the good things others have done for us. Brethren, when we are fed with gossips and unproven allegations about people we know, let us be wise and smart like the blind man, by not allowing other people’s wicked gossips to to dwarf what we know about good people. Let people go on with their wicked lies and gossips, but you too say what good you know about the people. The blind man never joined the Pharisees in calling Jesus a sinner. He focused on what Christ did for him and that was all that was important.
Beloved, let us examine our current relationship with God. If it is good, that’s all that matters. If it is not too good, let us work on it now, for it is who we are now that matters, and never about gossips and unnecessary theological arguments. Also, rather than joining others to crucify good people with baseless gossips and lies, let us rise to be counted in speaking only to what good we know about good people.
The Lord help and bless us.
