For the Week

Matthew 6:33 enjoins us to seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and everything shall be added unto us. Revelations 1:8 also reads ““I am the Alpha and the Omega—the beginning and the end,” says the Lord God. “I am the one who is, who always was, and who is still to come—the Almighty One.”

I glean from the two scriptures quoted above to write a brief sermon for the week, on the need for us to put God first in everything that we do.

Beloved, there is no problem we face that is bigger and intimidates God and there’s no human need that cannot be met by God. But sometimes, we magnify our needs and problems, create a certain unnecessary sense of urgency about them and then rush to do all manner of things to address them on our own.

In the process of rushing, we take God out of the equation. We get up from the bed and the very first thing we pick is our phones that contain messages that direct what we should do. We pick up phone calls early in the morning that dictate what we should be doing even when we haven’t prayed. We take up every offer of appointment, promotion, and opportunities without first talking to God. Our decisions are limited and fraught with challenges because they are only based on logic, critical thinking and the information available to us.

But really, can any human being do without God? Is there a problem that man can competently solve better than God? Honestly, if we do not deliberately choose God first, it will in the end make no difference what we choose instead. When we put God first, all other things fall into their proper places or drop out of our lives. When we put God first, God takes care of us and energizes us to do what really needs to be done. When we put God first, He scuttles the plan of the devil against us. So, God first in everything we do and all else would be well for us.

Amen
