Ghana and Egypt are exploring new opportunities to strengthen bilateral cooperation in key sectors including defence, pharmaceuticals, trade and infrastructure development.
President John Dramani Mahama and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi reaffirmed the strong historical relationship between the two countries and expressed their commitment to deepening cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
The two leaders made the commitment during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 8th African Union Mid-Year Coordination Summit, held alongside the inaugural Alamein Africa Forum in Egypt.
Ghana-Egypt Relations and Pan-African Legacy
President Mahama and President el-Sisi reflected on the longstanding relationship between Ghana and Egypt, particularly the Pan-African vision shared by Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, and former Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser.
Both leaders agreed that the historical foundation established by the two leaders remains important as Ghana and Egypt seek to address emerging African development and regional challenges.
President Mahama also expressed appreciation to Egypt for supporting Ghana’s resolution on reparations at the United Nations and encouraged Cairo to continue supporting the initiative as international discussions progress.
Ghana and Egypt Seek to Expand Bilateral Trade
The two presidents discussed measures to strengthen Ghana-Egypt trade relations, including deeper political consultations and increased commercial cooperation.
The pharmaceutical sector emerged as a major area of discussion, with both sides considering ways to facilitate the registration of Egyptian pharmaceutical products in Ghana.
Improved access to pharmaceutical products, the discussions noted, could contribute to healthcare delivery in Ghana while creating opportunities for investment and business partnerships between the two countries.
Defence and Security Cooperation
Defence and regional security cooperation also featured prominently during the meeting.
President Mahama expressed Ghana’s interest in strengthening security cooperation with Egypt, pointing to Egypt’s advanced defence industry as an area from which Ghana could draw useful experience.
The proposed areas of collaboration include intelligence sharing, security capacity building and counter-terrorism efforts, particularly as African countries work to address evolving regional security threats.
The leaders also discussed support for the Sahel-Gulf of Guinea Accord, as well as initiatives related to social housing development.
Ghana Interested in Egypt’s Infrastructure Experience
Infrastructure development and urban planning were another key focus of the Ghana-Egypt bilateral discussions.
President Mahama said Ghana is interested in learning from Egypt’s technical expertise in executing large-scale infrastructure projects, particularly the development of the New Administrative Capital.
Ghana hopes to draw lessons from Egypt’s experience as the country advances its own strategic plans for the development of a new capital city.
The latest discussions highlight the growing scope of Ghana-Egypt bilateral relations, with both countries seeking to translate their historic ties into stronger cooperation in trade, healthcare, defence, infrastructure and regional development.
