The National Identification Authority (NIA) has commenced the registration of children aged between six and 14 years in the North East and Upper East Regions as part of the phased rollout of the Ghana Card registration programme for children.
The exercise is being conducted in partnership with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) and is aimed at ensuring eligible Ghanaian children are enrolled in the national identification system.
Ghana Card Registration Teams to Visit Schools
According to a statement dated September 28, 2026, and signed by the Head of the NIA Corporate Affairs Directorate, Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, registration teams will visit both public and private schools across the North East and Upper East Regions.
The registration exercise will take place between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., with officials moving from one school to another to register eligible children.
Children who are not enrolled in school will also have the opportunity to register at designated schools or other approved registration centres within their communities.
Documents Required for Children’s Ghana Card Registration
Parents and guardians presenting children for the Ghana Card registration exercise are required to provide one of the following original documents:
- Birth certificate
- Valid Ghanaian passport
- Certificate of Acquired Citizenship
Where none of these documents is available, a parent, relative or legal guardian may complete an Oath of Identity form on behalf of the child.
The NIA also stated that two Social Welfare Officers may vouch for children who have no known relatives.
Parents and guardians have further been encouraged to provide the child’s NHIS card or NHIS number, where available, to support the registration process.
Who Can Present a Child for Registration?
The person presenting a child for registration must be a Ghanaian citizen aged 18 years or older, be of sound mind and have a valid Ghana Card.
The requirements are intended to ensure that children are properly identified and that accurate information is captured during the national identification registration process.
Children Registered During 2024 Pilot Exercise Should Not Re-register
The NIA has clarified that children who took part in the 2024 Ghana Card pilot registration exercise but have not yet received their cards should not register again.
Instead, their parents or guardians should take them to the NIA District Office where they originally registered to facilitate the issuance of their Ghana Cards.
NIA Warns Against False Information
The Authority has urged parents, guardians, schools and other stakeholders in the North East and Upper East Regions to support the registration exercise and help ensure that all eligible children have access to the Ghana Card.
The NIA has also cautioned the public against submitting false information or assisting non-Ghanaians to register, stressing that such actions constitute offences punishable under Ghanaian law.
Ghana Card Children’s Registration Expands Nationwide
The latest phase of the children’s Ghana Card registration programme follows the commencement of the exercise in the Volta and Oti Regions in May 2026.
The programme was subsequently extended to the Northern Region as the NIA continues its phased national rollout of Ghana Card registration for children aged six to 14.
