The Republic of Ghana’s government vehemently and categorically denounces the coup d’état that was executed by military personnel in the Republic of Guinea-Bissau.
Following the peaceful conduct of the presidential and legislative elections on November 23, 2025, this illegitimate takeover of power upsets the electoral process and is a direct attack on democratic governance.
The Ghanaian government is extremely concerned about this development and is deeply displeased with the blatant attempt to subvert the decision of the Guinea-Bissau people.
The action has impeded the expected publication of the election results on November 27, 2025, and dangerously disrupted the country’s democratic trajectory.
Ghana urges all parties to follow the democratic process and demands that Guinea-Bissau’s constitutional order be immediately restored.
Only peaceful, open, and legally recognized channels may be used to resolve any complaints resulting from the elections.
The Ghanaian government also calls for the protection of all citizens’ and foreign nationals’ fundamental rights and security.
The protection of the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission officials who are now stationed in Guinea-Bissau is given special attention; their safety and safe transit must be ensured right away.
Ghana urges the people of Guinea-Bissau to maintain composure, use extreme caution, and refrain from taking any acts that could heighten tensions.
In compliance with regional and continental conventions on democracy, good governance, and constitutional rule, the Ghanaian government reiterates its complete support for ECOWAS and the African Union in their coordinated response to the crisis.
