Reports that Ghanaian peacekeeping forces are being abused in Lebanon have been refuted by the Ghana Armed Forces.

The military announced in a press release dated January 5, 2026, that it had been aware of allegations that Ghanaian soldiers serving in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) were prohibited from shopping and required to cover their own flights when returning home on leave.

“The attention of the Ghana Armed Forces has been drawn to a publication circulating in the media,” the statement read, adding that the story contained “untrue” and “misleading” information.

GAF emphasised that UNIFIL headquarters, not the Ghanaian battalion, made the shopping arrangements for troops in Lebanon because of security concerns.

Eleven stores run by local Lebanese vendors have been set up in two Ghanaian battalion locations, together with a Post Exchange store, according to the release.

According to the statement, “this offers troops the option to purchase from a number of shops and not the Post Exchange shop only, as has been reported.”

The Armed Forces categorically denied allegations that soldiers paid for their own airfares.

According to the announcement, “the story is untrue as the Government of Ghana continues to fully fund troops’ airfare for all Ghana Armed Forces peacekeepers.”

Additionally, GAF cautioned that the dissemination of misleading information might be detrimental to both the nation’s prestige and soldier morale.

The statement went on, “Such misinformation undermines discipline and morale of troops and could further tarnish the image of the country.”
