The Ghana Marine Police has launched a coordinated search operation for seven missing fishermen and their canoe after they failed to return from a fishing expedition off the coast of Axim in the Western Region.

The search involves the Ghana Navy, Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), Fisheries Commission and local fishing communities, all working together to locate the missing crew and their vessel.

According to the Western Regional Marine Police Command, preliminary information suggests that the canoe, identified as Second Chance, may have experienced engine failure while at sea and drifted towards Tema and the Volta Coast.

A press release signed by Chief Superintendent of Police Olivia Adiku, Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Western Regional Police Command, said the canoe’s owner, Nana Kweku Atta, reported the disappearance at the Fishing Harbour Police Station in Sekondi on October 18, 2026.

The authorities are continuing efforts to establish the whereabouts of the fishermen and determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The disappearance has raised concerns about the safety of fishermen at sea and the risks associated with engine failure and unpredictable maritime conditions along Ghana’s coastline.
