Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minister of Health, has convened a strategic conference with pharmaceutical production businesses to enhance the country’s pharmaceutical industry and establish Ghana as an African drug manufacturing powerhouse.
The meeting, conducted on Monday, August 25, 2025, brought together key participants in the local pharmaceutical business to discuss how to increase production capacity, improve quality standards, and expand access to essential medicines.
Hon. Akandoh emphasized the government’s commitment to provide local producers with the necessary regulations, infrastructure, and incentives to expand their operations.
He emphasized that developing a thriving pharmaceutical sector is critical not just for Ghana’s health security but also for economic growth and regional competitiveness.

“Ghana is ready to lead Africa in pharmaceutical production. We have the expertise, the capacity, and the political will to make this vision a reality,” the health minister noted.
The engagement is part of Ghana’s overall industrialization strategy, which involves promoting the country as Africa’s pharmaceutical powerhouse.
This effort is expected to minimize reliance on imported pharmaceuticals, create jobs, and promote innovation in healthcare delivery.
Industry stakeholders praised the move, describing it as timely given the continent’s growing demand for low-cost, high-quality medications.
They expressed confidence that with adequate government backing, Ghana will be able to attain self-sufficiency in medication manufacture and increase its presence in regional markets.
The discussions also included strengthening regulatory frameworks, guaranteeing conformity with international standards, and supporting research and development to support the industry’s expansion.
