The 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has been selected as a major subcontractor for the dualisation of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway, following the successful completion of a major right-of-way clearing exercise.
The decision is expected to increase the participation of Ghanaian institutions in one of the country’s most significant road infrastructure and transportation projects.
President John Dramani Mahama announced the decision during a handover ceremony held on Monday, September 14, 2026, after the Engineers Regiment completed the clearing of 175.6 kilometres of the proposed expressway corridor.
Mahama Directs Engineers Regiment to Join Expressway Construction
President Mahama said the decision to involve the Ghana Armed Forces Engineers Regiment reflects the government’s confidence in the technical capabilities and performance of the military engineering unit.
He directed the Minister for Roads and Highways to incorporate the regiment into the project as a major subcontractor to the main construction company.
“I direct the Minister of Roads and Highways to incorporate the Ghana Armed Forces Engineers Regiment as a major subcontractor to the main contractor for the expressway,” President Mahama said.
The move is expected to create opportunities for local participation, skills development and technology transfer during the construction of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway.
Engineers Regiment Completes Road Clearing Ahead of Schedule
The 48 Engineer Regiment successfully completed the 175.6-kilometre right-of-way clearing exercise in 19 weeks, beating the original 20-week deadline by one week.
President Mahama praised the regiment for its performance, saying the early completion demonstrated the efficiency, professionalism and commitment of Ghana’s military engineering personnel.
“Our armed forces have accomplished this mission one week ahead of schedule. They did it in 19 weeks,” he said.
The successful completion of the clearing exercise marks an important preparatory milestone ahead of the main construction phase of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway project.
Ghana Armed Forces to Support New Accra Orbital Road
President Mahama has also directed the 48 Engineer Regiment to begin preparations for the clearing of the right-of-way for the proposed New Accra Orbital Road.
The instruction expands the role of the Ghana Armed Forces Engineers Regiment in supporting major national infrastructure projects.
The involvement of the military engineering unit is expected to contribute to faster preparatory works while strengthening Ghanaian capacity in large-scale road construction and infrastructure development.
Accra-Kumasi Expressway to Transform Transportation
The dualisation of the Accra-Kumasi corridor is expected to improve road connectivity between Ghana’s two largest economic centres.
The project is designed to reduce travel time, improve road safety, lower transportation and logistics costs, and facilitate the movement of people and goods.
It is also expected to support economic growth, job creation, trade and investment opportunities along the Accra-Kumasi corridor.
The participation of the Ghana Armed Forces Engineers Regiment is expected to provide additional technical capacity as government moves ahead with the implementation of the strategic transport infrastructure project.
