The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has accused North Korea of carrying out a major cyberattack that resulted in the theft of more than US$6 billion in cryptocurrency from Binance, one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges.

According to an FBI security alert, the theft occurred on or around October 29, 2026. The agency has identified the North Korean cyber operation as “TraderTraitor”, linking it to malicious activities targeting digital assets.

The FBI, working with the United States Secret Service (USSS) and the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division (IRS-CI), said investigators had observed the hackers converting the stolen cryptocurrency primarily into Ethereum (ETH).

Authorities believe the stolen digital assets could undergo further laundering through decentralised finance (DeFi) platforms and instant cryptocurrency swap services to conceal their origins and make tracking more difficult.

FBI Urges Cryptocurrency Industry to Block Suspicious Transactions

The FBI and its partner agencies have called on cryptocurrency businesses and blockchain service providers to help prevent the movement of the stolen funds.

The appeal specifically targets THORNode operators, RPC node operators, instant cryptocurrency exchanges, DeFi platforms, blockchain analytics companies and other virtual asset service providers.

These organisations have been urged to identify and block transactions involving cryptocurrency wallet addresses linked to the TraderTraitor operation, including addresses associated with laundering the stolen funds.

The FBI has also published a list of cryptocurrency addresses connected to the alleged North Korean cyber operation to help industry players identify and prevent suspicious transactions.

The incident highlights growing concerns about cryptocurrency theft, North Korean cybercrime, digital asset security and money laundering through decentralised financial platforms.
