A group of journalists covering illegal mining operations in cooperation with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) were involved in a traffic accident, which has deeply alarmed the Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA).
The Association expressed solidarity and compassion to the impacted journalists, their families, and their media organisations in a statement written by Regional Chairman Kofi Adu Domfeh on Friday, November 7, 2025.
“We stand in full solidarity with our affected colleagues in this difficult moment. Our thoughts and prayers are with them, their families, and their media organizations,” the statement said.
The GJA stressed that journalists’ safety and well-being are still of utmost importance, characterising the event as a sobering reminder of the dangers that reporters encounter when researching stories of national interest, especially on illegal mining, or galamsey.
In order to guarantee that the impacted journalists receive the required medical care and psychological support, the Association stated that it is collaborating closely with pertinent authorities and partners.
Additionally, Mr Domfeh urged organisations and organisations that include the media in field operations—particularly in high-risk areas—to give safety procedures top priority and make sure they are properly coordinated and prepared before starting such assignments.
“As journalists continue to play their watchdog role in bringing national attention to environmental and social challenges, it is imperative that their safety be given topmost priority,” the statement continued.
The Ashanti GJA reiterated that it will help and stand by its members while they heal from the catastrophe.
