The Ghana government has commenced land preparation for the construction of a modern 400-bed Mother and Child Block at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.
The major healthcare infrastructure project is expected to replace the hospital’s existing and ageing Maternity Unit, providing improved facilities for maternal and child healthcare.
Minister of Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu announced the development in a post on X, describing the project as part of President John Mahama’s investment in major, world-class health infrastructure.
New Mother and Child Facility at Korle Bu
The proposed 400-bed Mother and Child Block is expected to provide a wide range of specialised healthcare services for women, mothers and children.
The facility will include Obstetrics and Gynaecology Wards, Labour and Delivery Suites, Operating Theatres and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Plans also include a High Dependency Unit (HDU), Intensive Care Unit (ICU), IVF and Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre, as well as dedicated antenatal and postnatal clinics.
Expanded Maternal and Reproductive Health Services
The new Korle Bu facility is also expected to house Fertility and Reproductive Health Clinics, Breastfeeding and Family Planning Units, and an Emergency Obstetric Care Unit.
Other planned facilities include a Diagnostic Imaging Department, Laboratory and Blood Bank Facilities, and a Pharmacy Department, providing a broader range of medical services within the new complex.
The project will further feature a Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD), Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Units, together with dedicated spaces for medical teaching, research and conferences.
Boost for Healthcare Delivery in Ghana
According to Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the development forms part of the government’s renewed efforts to invest in major health infrastructure in Ghana and improve the quality of healthcare delivery.
The new Mother and Child Block is expected to strengthen maternal healthcare, neonatal services and reproductive health care at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital while providing modern facilities for healthcare professionals, patients and medical training.
The project represents another major investment in Ghana’s healthcare infrastructure as the government seeks to improve access to specialised medical services and modernise key public hospitals.
