The Ashanti Region’s illegal mining activities have been stepped up by the National Anti-illicit Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) Taskforce, which over the weekend destroyed several galamsey sites and seized heavy machinery.
The operations, conducted on February 14 and 15, targeted illegal mining operations at Edwinase in the Bekwai Municipality and Wromanso in the Amansie Central District along the River Offin.
Three excavators, three pump action guns, three pumping machines, a radiator, a monitor, and fourteen BB cartridges were seized as a result of the operation on February 14. Two illicit mining sites at Edwinase were raided by the taskforce.
When the taskforce’s trucks approached the first site, a number of miners ran away.
The next day, February 15, the taskforce raided illegal mining operations in Wromanso in the Amansie Central District and seized two Sany excavators, one wheel loader, and one XCMG excavator.
They were then sent to the NAIMOS equipment lodgement in Kumasi.
In order to bolster the fight against illegal mining, the NAIMOS Secretariat stated that it plans to expand operations in the Ashanti Region and is looking for improved logistics support, such as access to lowbeds, speed boats, and life jackets.
