Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), has faced criticism for his response to violence during the election.

The IGP has come under fire from security expert Andrews Asiedu Tetteh for what he called their “poor leadership,” which has permitted political tensions to turn violent both before and after elections.

Speaking on Rainbow Radio’s “Frontline” show, Mr. Asiedu Tetteh accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of encouraging their supporters to act in a disorderly manner.

He charged that political figures were inciting instability by inciting their followers to rebel against the government and commit crimes.

“The invasion of state facilities by some suspected NDC members is a direct result of their political leaders’ rhetoric,” he said.

The analyst claimed that security specialists had foreseen such instances well before the elections, but nothing substantial had been done to stop them.

Mr. Asiedu Tetteh was disappointed with IGP Dampare’s performance, pointing to one of his main shortcomings as his incapacity to take firm action against offenders.

“What we are witnessing is not surprising. Before the elections, some politicians openly incited their supporters to act recklessly, and now these individuals feel emboldened,” he said.

Additionally, the analyst demanded that Dr. Dampare be removed from office, claiming that the rule of law is undermined by his failure to apprehend and prosecute violators.

“As a police officer, your duty is to uphold the law without fear or favour. Pleasing politicians should never take precedence over enforcing justice,” he stated.

Mr. Asiedu Tetteh not only criticized the IGP but also blamed former Presidents John Dramani Mahama and Nana Akufo-Addo for their failure to solve security issues.

He criticized Mr. Akufo-Addo for failing to handle security issues during his administration and charged Mr. Mahama of failing to control NDC supporters when they engaged in damaging actions.

“Both leaders bear responsibility for allowing this culture of impunity to fester,” he continued.

Concerns about the politicization of Ghana’s security apparatus and the necessity of impartiality and toughness in executing the law, especially during election periods, are highlighted by the security analyst’s remarks.
