Karpowership Ghana is seeking an extension of its electricity generation contract beyond August 2027, when its current licence is scheduled to expire.

The power generation company says it remains optimistic about ongoing discussions with the Ghanaian government and believes its contribution to the country’s electricity supply provides a strong basis for extending its operations.

Karpowership currently supplies approximately 450 megawatts (MW) of electricity to Ghana’s national grid, making it an important contributor to the country’s power generation capacity.

The future of the company’s operations came into focus following a working visit by Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson to the Karpowership facility in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.

The visit was aimed at familiarising the minister with the company’s operations and assessing its contribution to Ghana’s energy and power sector.

Karpowership’s Role in Ghana’s Electricity Supply

Karpowership Ghana has been a significant player in Ghana’s power generation system, supplying electricity to the national grid to support the country’s growing energy needs.

The company maintains that its continued operations could contribute to electricity reliability and energy security in Ghana, particularly as the country works to meet rising demand for power.

With its current licence due to expire in August 2027, the company is engaging the government over a possible contract extension.

Karpowership says it is confident that the discussions will result in a positive outcome, pointing to its ongoing role in Ghana’s electricity generation and national power supply.

The discussions are expected to remain important for Ghana’s energy sector, particularly as policymakers consider the country’s future power generation requirements and the need to maintain a stable and reliable national grid.
