Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, a New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirant, has openly stated that he does not fear anyone in the main opposition party after refusing requests to unconditionally apologise to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for spreading false information about the former Vice President.
He has rather strengthened his earlier unjustifiable labelling of Dr Bawumia as a “liar,” claiming that he will not retract the remark despite increased calls for him to do what is necessary to restore calm and unity following the signing of the party’s Peace Pact.
“I will not apologise. I’ll apologies for my foot. “I don’t fear anyone,” Kennedy Agyapong said, reiterating his stance and implying that he would not be compelled to retract his ‘Bawumia is a liar’ remark.
After incorrectly attributing to the former vice president the assertion made by Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, commonly known as Chairman Wontumi, that Professor Albert Adu-Boahen did not run in the 1996 NPP presidential primary due to illness, he called Dr. Bawumia a liar.
Kennedy Agyapong reportedly issued a statement apologising to Dr. Bawumia amid the reaction.
Team Ken’s campaign spokesperson, Kwasi Kwarteng, refuted the assertion, stating that Kennedy Agyapong continues to support his accusations against Dr. Bawumia.
Many people who have been following this story believe that signing an apology and then publicly retracting it, along with increasing insults directed at Dr. Bawumia and other candidates, is not courageous leadership. Rather, it is poor political behaviour that could worsen divisions within the NPP at this critical juncture when the party is attempting to maintain unity before the January 31, 2026, presidential primary.
Following a contentious post-event description of the Peace Pact ceremony during a campaign tour of the Central Region, in which he said he resisted pressure and only consented to sign after voicing concerns about what he saw as inaccuracies in the peace pact, the former Assin Central MP made yet another act of resistance.
Political observers have characterised his stance as politically stupid and reckless.
