Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Minister-designate Mahama Ayariga has described former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s National Cathedral project as a worthwhile idea that was poorly executed.
Speaking during his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday, August 27, 2025, the Bawku Central Member of Parliament said he supports the fundamental concept of establishing a national place of worship for Christians in Ghana.
Mahama Ayariga Supports National Cathedral Concept
Mahama Ayariga acknowledged the important role religion plays in the lives of Ghanaians, noting that places of worship are essential to the practice of different faiths.
According to the Minister-designate, there is nothing inherently wrong with establishing a National Cathedral for Christians in Ghana, despite the country’s constitutional status as a secular state.
He said churches, cathedrals, mosques and other religious centres contribute to the practice and expression of faith across the country.
Ayariga Criticises National Cathedral Execution
While supporting the concept behind the Ghana National Cathedral, Ayariga raised concerns about how the project was implemented under the Akufo-Addo administration.
He particularly identified the location of the National Cathedral project as one of the major issues he had with its execution.
Ayariga said the original idea was sound but argued that weaknesses in its implementation undermined the project.
His comments come amid renewed public debate over the National Cathedral project, its construction, funding, location and management, as well as discussions about the role of government in supporting major religious infrastructure projects in Ghana.
The remarks were made during Mahama Ayariga’s parliamentary vetting as he seeks approval for the Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Ministry.
