President John Dramani Mahama has inspected the Bechem Meat Processing Factory in the Ahafo Region as the government intensifies efforts to boost local poultry production and reduce Ghana’s dependence on imported chicken.

The poultry processing facility is expected to commence operations by the end of the first quarter of 2027, marking a significant step towards strengthening Ghana’s agricultural sector, creating employment opportunities and supporting the local poultry industry.

When fully operational, the factory will have the capacity to process 6,000 birds per hour through two production lines dedicated to broilers and layers. The facility is also expected to improve poultry processing capacity, enhance food supply and create more market opportunities for local poultry farmers.

The project forms part of the government’s Nkoko Nketenkete programme, an initiative designed to increase domestic poultry production, support farmers and reduce the country’s reliance on imported poultry products.

As of May 2026, Ghana’s share of domestic poultry production had reportedly increased from 4.6% to 22%, reflecting progress under the programme to expand local chicken production and strengthen the poultry value chain.

The Bechem Meat Processing Factory, together with its accompanying animal feed mill, is expected to play a crucial role in improving poultry farming and processing in Ghana. The integrated facility will help support feed production, poultry processing and market access for farmers across the country.

The investment is also expected to contribute to agricultural development, job creation, food security and private-sector growth, while providing local poultry farmers with improved opportunities to supply the domestic market.

The government’s broader objective is to build a more competitive poultry industry capable of meeting growing consumer demand, increasing farmers’ incomes and reducing expenditure on imported chicken.

With operations projected to begin in early 2027, the Bechem facility is expected to become an important part of Ghana’s strategy to strengthen local poultry production and promote sustainable growth in the agricultural sector.
