The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has urged MTN Ghana to match its market leadership with enhanced service quality, fair pricing, and wider network access, as the business celebrates its 30th anniversary in Accra.
Speaking at the press conference on May 14, 2026, at MTN House, the Minister praised the business for hitting the three-decade mark and called it a noteworthy accomplishment in Ghana’s developing telecom industry.
He pointed out that the sector has evolved from the 1990s’ restricted fixed-line access to a contemporary, data-driven environment with more than 40 million subscribers.
The Minister praised MTN’s contribution to that change, pointing to the company’s introduction of GSM technology, innovation in Mobile Money services, and consistent investments in digital infrastructure and network growth.
He also mentioned the company’s ongoing commitment as one of Ghana’s biggest corporate taxpayers and its newly announced US$1 billion network investment program.
But he emphasised that MTN has more responsibilities as a Significant Market Power (SMP) provider.
“That designation is not a criticism; it is a recognition of your scale. But it also means the public and the Ministry will hold MTN to a higher standard on pricing, quality of service, network availability, and transparency,” the Minister said.
The high cost of data, uneven network coverage in rural regions, dropped calls, and the length of time it takes to address customer complaints are just a few of the enduring issues he brought to light. He challenged the business to make sure that its continuous investments result in noticeable gains for customers.
Hon. Samuel Nartey George emphasised that in order to address more general issues like infrastructure protection, cybersecurity, digital inclusion, and the digital skills gap, government agencies, regulators, and industry participants must work together.
He mentioned that in order to facilitate the industry’s next stage of expansion, the Ministry is now examining important policy tools, such as data protection laws and spectrum policy.
He urged operators to make investments in neglected neighbourhoods as well as lucrative locations, pointing to new prospects in 5G, AI, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things.
Mr Stephen Blewett, the CEO of MTN Ghana, called the anniversary a time to reflect on a journey characterised by effect on the country, advancement, and connectivity.
He underlined that MTN’s narrative focuses on the lives that are changed by connectivity rather than just infrastructure.
He described how Ghanaians had adopted the brand as their own, citing a symbolic story of a farmer who, because of his involvement as a client, saw MTN’s assets as collectively owned.
This is more than just a business milestone. He declared, “It is a national story, three decades of connection, progress, and possibility.”
The CEO acknowledged the Minister’s request for greater performance standards and reiterated the company’s commitment to fulfilling the expectations set by the government and customers.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, Mr. Blewett also announced a number of customer-focused events and promotions, characterising them as “bigger and better” initiatives to strengthen engagement and reward loyalty.
According to Adjoa Wiafe, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer at MTN Ghana, the anniversary is more about the company’s impact than it is about time passing.
She highlighted MTN’s role in linking households, companies, schools, and healthcare facilities nationwide as she considered the company’s transformation from a connection provider to a leader in digital and financial inclusion.
“Today is not about age; it is about impact. We are celebrating how far we have come and the lives we have touched,” she remarked.
She also highlighted MTN’s wider contributions to the country’s growth, such as its backing of sports teams like the Black Stars and its function in promoting inclusivity and unity via digital connectivity.
