The government’s proposal to collaborate with a private developer to bring the Saglemi Housing Project back to life is being opposed by the opposition in the Ghanaian Parliament.

According to Minister of Works and Housing Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the project will require an estimated $100 million in repairs. Mr. Nkrumah disclosed plans to find a private partner in five weeks while doing a site visit.

The ranking member of the Works and Housing Committee, Mr. Vincent Oppong Asamoah, asserts that the administration wants to market the project to its supporters.

“They just want to reduce the price, and then they will sell it to their cronies. They are saying, ‘Oh, we are bringing in partners here’, and at the end of it, it is their people that are going to come in,” he suspected.

The opposition MP said: “If you go out there, all state lands and every property is going for sale under the NPP administration. Every property, landed property, is going for sale. Let’s see the end of the NPP administration, and we will see the rot.”

The Saglemi housing project was started in 2012 by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government with the intention of constructing 5,000 units. However, the project was shelved due to allegations of fund mismanagement.
