Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh (Napo), the energy minister and representative for Manhyia South, has denied using a private jet to travel to Monaco to celebrate his birthday.
This follows a report that claimed the Energy Minister took a private plane to Monaco to celebrate his birthday.
The Energy Minister and Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Kofi Abrefa Afena, responded to the claim in a statement released by his spokeswoman, saying: “Among other unintelligent postulations, the publication alleges that the Energy Minister and Member of Parliament for Manhyia South flew a certain phantomized private jet to celebrate his birthday.”
The document stated: “On May 23, 2023, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s 55th birthday, he was in Ghana and attended a meeting of the Economic Management Team (EMT).”
The statement said, “On May 23, Dr. Prempeh also attended a board meeting of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC)’s governing board.
“I was in Dr. Prempeh’s home early on May 24, the day following his birthday, at his request, where he recorded a thank-you message to his well-wishers for the love shown him on his birthday,” I recall.
Dr. Prempeh spent the remainder of the “day of the 24th in his office, where he carried out his routine official duties,” the Minister’s spokesperson continued.
He stated that Dr. Prempeh traveled abroad on KLM to Athens for a brief vacation after obtaining the required consent from the Chief of Staff at the Office of the President.
“There is indisputable evidence to support this.”
Anyone who knows Dr. Prempeh well would attest to the fact that he does not celebrate his birthday with fanfare or glitz; rather, on those days, as a devout Christian, he prefers to be by himself in sobriety and give thanks to the Almighty God for his grace and mercies. This year’s events were no different.
The message concluded, “The general public is kindly requested to completely disregard this publication.”
