Parliament is expected to reconvene today, Tuesday, September 29, 2026, for an emergency sitting following concerns raised by the Minority Caucus over a number of major cocaine seizures involving consignments linked to Ghana.
The special parliamentary sitting comes after French authorities seized nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine at the Port of Dunkirk from a container reportedly shipped from Ghana.
The development has increased scrutiny of Ghana’s ports, customs procedures, cargo inspection systems and national security measures designed to prevent the country from becoming a transit route for illegal drugs.
The emergency sitting was requested by the Minority Caucus, led by First Deputy Minority Whip and Tolon MP Habib Iddrisu, under Article 112(3) of the 1992 Constitution.
During the one-day sitting, lawmakers are expected to demand explanations from relevant government agencies regarding the circumstances surrounding the cocaine seizures and the possible involvement of Ghana in the movement of the consignments.
Parliament is also expected to investigate how the container was processed, inspected and cleared for export, as well as identify the state institutions responsible for monitoring such shipments.
Particular attention is likely to be placed on whether weaknesses existed within Ghana’s customs, port security and cargo monitoring systems, and whether such gaps could have facilitated international drug trafficking activities.
The parliamentary discussion comes amid growing calls for stronger accountability, improved intelligence sharing and closer cooperation among state institutions involved in the fight against narcotics trafficking in Ghana.
The Minority Caucus is also seeking clarification on other significant drug seizures involving consignments reportedly connected to Ghana.
The emergency parliamentary sitting could therefore provide an opportunity for lawmakers to examine the broader implications of the seizures for Ghana’s national security, international reputation, border controls and efforts to combat illegal drug trafficking.
