The Ghana Police Service has arrested 64 suspects during a security operation targeting the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition at a lounge near Achimota Mile 7 in the Greater Accra Region.
The operation was conducted by the Office of the Special Operations Assistant to the Inspector-General of Police (SOA) in collaboration with the National SWAT team.
Police Raid Lounge Following Criminal Activity Reports
The security operation followed complaints from residents about suspected criminal activities at the lounge and nearby areas.
According to the police, some of the reports involved the alleged open display and possible sale of firearms, prompting law enforcement authorities to conduct the raid.
During the operation, officers discovered a blue, unregistered Acura vehicle containing a pistol holster.
Since no person at the scene claimed ownership of the holster, the vehicle was impounded and taken to Police Headquarters for further investigations.
Suspect Allegedly Posed as Police Officer
One of the individuals arrested was identified as Theophilus Ashon, who allegedly claimed to be a police officer attached to the CID Operations.
Police checks subsequently established that Ashon was not affiliated with the Ghana Police Service.
A search conducted on the suspect reportedly led to the recovery of a Smith & Wesson pistol loaded with six rounds of 9mm ammunition.
Police Recover Weapons and Ammunition in Atico
Further intelligence gathered during the investigation led police officers to a location in Atico, where another suspect, Michael Emmanuel Kingsley Mills, was arrested.
A search of Mills’ residence resulted in the recovery of several firearms and quantities of ammunition.
The items reportedly seized included:
- Three pump-action guns
- Four pistols
- 62 AA and BB cartridges
- 54 rounds of .40-calibre ammunition
- Other items being treated as exhibits
The seizure forms part of ongoing investigations into the alleged illegal possession and possible trafficking of firearms and ammunition.
64 Suspects in Police Custody
The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that all 64 suspects remain in custody and are assisting investigators with the ongoing inquiry.
Police said the suspects will subsequently be put before the court as investigations continue.
The operation forms part of broader efforts by the Ghana Police Service to address suspected illegal firearms possession, criminal activities and threats to public safety in communities across the Greater Accra Region.
