A well-known armed robbery group that has been implicated in several violent residential robberies in the area has been taken into custody by the Ashanti Regional Police Command.
One suspect was shot during a gunfight with police during the arrest of the alleged thieves, and he was subsequently declared dead at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
Yahaya Nuhu, another suspect, is still at large and is being actively sought.
The suspects were apprehended on Friday, June 27, 2025, at approximately 11:30 a.m., thanks to a prompt response from joint patrol teams from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) District police and the Regional Operation.
Kwadwo Kyei Baffour, 39; Joseph Oppong, also known as Joe, 30; and Bernard Owusu Ansah, also known as Hot Boy, 27 were among the main suspects apprehended from their hiding places in relation to the crimes.
Suspect Kwadwo Kyei Baffour later confessed to raping a victim during one of the robberies and to taking part in the others during questioning.
Later, one of the suspects, Bernard Owusu Ansah, is undergoing medical treatment at KATH under the watch of armed police officers, while Kwadwo Konadu, 28; James Asare Boateng, 26; Emmanuel Asiedu, 27; Maxwell Gyimah, 30; and Daniel Dwumor were all apprehended.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Emmanuel Teye Cudjoe, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, briefed the media on Monday, June 30, 2025, stating that the action was taken in response to many allegations of armed robbery events in Abuakwa, Tanoso, Apatrapa, Dechembuoso, Appiadu, and the adjacent districts.
According to him, investigations showed that the suspects, who were armed with pistols, pump-action firearms, and other offensive weapons, broke into residential homes, took victims and their families hostage, and stole valuables, including cash and electronics.
The suspects were found to have three vehicles, including a Kia Morning and two Toyota Corolla cars with registration numbers GX 4388-19 and AS 4777-22, as well as numerous laptops, tablets, cell phones, wristwatches, television sets, and WiFi routers.
Others include the Jojeff pump-action shotgun (No. 8782) with 33 rounds of ammo, the Taurus pistol (ACC721513) with 4 rounds of 9mm ammunition, and the NP Cal 9x19mm pistol (No. 11501418).
