Police in the Bono East Region have shot and killed a suspected notorious armed robber in Atebubu.
He has been identified by the authorities as Mahamadu Gariba Kirror, the head of the six-person robbery group that attacked and killed a minibus driver and stole items from passengers in the Atebubu area in January 2025.
Using intelligence, the police detained Gariba around 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, [January 31, 2026].
He offered to assist the police in apprehending his fellow gang members following an initial interrogation.
However, according to a police situational report (SITREP) obtained by Graphic Online, the suspect, who was leading a police team to apprehend his other accomplices, attempted to leave and was shot by police on Sunday [February 1, 2026] at 7:45pm.
“When the team got closer to the hideout of the accomplices, the suspect advised police to use a footpath which, leads to the said location. However, suspect Mahamadu Gariba Kirror immediately took to his heels and in an attempt to enter a nearby forest and escape. The team fired shots to maim him where he sustained gunshots injuries. He was rushed to the Atebubu Government Hospital for medical attention but was pronounced dead by the medical officer on duty,” the police situational stated.
The police stated that a search of him yielded exhibits including a locally manufactured firearm, two live BB cartridges, a Samsung Galaxy AO7 mobile phone, two keypad mobile phones, and a talisman.
According to investigations, the Samsung AO7 belongs to Nafisa Owusu Haruna, a Yeji resident who was robbed by the suspect on the Atebubu-Yeji highway in December 2025.
During the heist, the driver of the minivan with registration number AS-6444-14 transporting passengers along the stretch was shot and killed by the robbers, as was the victim Nafisa.
“On interrogation suspect Kirror admitted that he and his other accomplices shot and killed the driver in charge of the mini van and succeeded in robbing the passengers on board,” it said.
According to the report, the suspect listed Umaru, Issifu, Furgur, Ibrahim, Shaibu, and Yelow as his accomplices.
